QUESTION

When does the Takbīr officially begin and end for Eid al-Adḥā?

ANSWER

Takbīr is of two varieties, each possessing a distinct time period within which they should be uttered. The first is known as Takbīr Mursal which is the Takbīr we utter at any and all times and places. We are encouraged to utter it in the mosques, in our homes and outside, raising our voices therewith starting from sunset on the 9th of Dhu l-Ḥijjah until the time for Eid Salah the following day.

The second is Takbīr Muqayyad, the one that follows the Salah, be it Fard or Nafl. It commences with Ẓuhr on the Day of Eid and concludes with Fajr on the 3rd day of Tashrīq. A good number of our scholars, including Imām al-Nawawī have endorsed a second opinion within the school: that its time ensues rather at Fajr on the 9th of Dhu l-Ḥijjah and ends at ʿAṣr (you would still utter the Takbīr after performing ʿAṣr prayer) on the 13th of Dhu l-Ḥijjah, otherwise known as the 3rd day of Tashrīq. This view too may be acted upon.
