QUESTION

Is it permissible to use Muslim marriage apps such as Salams, Muslima.com, and Muzz.com?

ANSWER

السلام عايكم ورحمة الله وبركاته

These Muslim marriage apps were created, to my knowledge, as a means for women, often reverts, to find husbands where they are otherwise unable to do so.

As long as the two individuals engaging in conversation have a genuine interest in marrying, and no ulterior motives of deriving enjoyment from illicit interaction, the use of apps such as Salams should be permissible. They should also avoid showing to one another any parts not allowed, that being anything more than the face and hands of the lady.

The only possible issue lies in the conversations being un-chaperoned by the lady’s waliyy (guardian). It would be best for the lady to show all conversation to her waliyy, ensuring everything is above board. This would also ease the ensuing processes of meeting her and proposing, if things go that far. However, I recognise this is not always possible, as many women thereon are reverts with no Muslim guardian.

In conclusion, this matter is entirely reliant upon the integrity and intentions of the persons involved.
